Open Staircase Hertfordshire
We supplied this Scandinavian style floating timber staircase to a client in St Albans. He was altering the layout in his property and needed to replace the old closed staircase which was blocking a lot of light.
42mm Oak treads
The default thickness on all our floating timber staircases is 42mm. We can increase this slightly if required but 42mm is the minimal to enable the treads to be used and held in place by the spindles. These were oak and this is a good picture showing the block laminate used. This type of stair would never be formed with solid pieces of timber of each step as they would bow and twist in place. Using laminated blocks strengthens the step preventing any movement.

White Handrail
Although the handrail on the staircase is always timber and either 150 or 160mm deep, varies finishes can be applied. Whilst many prefer it to match the timber on the treads this client opted to have it factory painted white to match the wall stringer. The newel posts was also supplied in white and it offers a nice contrast with the grain and tone of the treads.
Custom Made Staircase
All our modern staircases are custom made. For most it is only the rise, going, width and angle which are unique but this project gave us a challenge as the wall towards the top of the stair was stepped in. The stringer is essential to the strength of the system but we had to supply the stair in two pieces with the top two steps 100mm smaller than the rest.
