Floating Staircase Kent
Our client was refurbing a cottage in Boughton Monchelsea near Maidstone in Kent. Two bedrooms were being added upstairs along with a couple of dormer windows. The sitting room was to house the staircase and we informed our customer the size the opening in the floor needed to be. It was important the stair didn’t dominate the living room or indeed block any light.
Oak Staircase
The floating stair run snugly up the wall before turning 90 degrees to the left. There wasn’t enough room to fit in a straight flight stair given the restrictions downstairs. With the wall stringer firmly bolted to the wall, the treads cantilevered out given the open and light effect our client was seeking.

Glass Infill Panel
As the 90 degree turn cut into the floor, a triangular shaped void was created between the ceiling wall and stringer. Instead of having spindles here we inserted a glass infill panel to keep it safe and maximise the passage of light.
Landing Balustrade
Over 5m of landing balustrade was required to protect the new stairwell opening. This was supplied with matching oak handrail, 80 x 80mm oak newel posts and 10mm toughened glass infill panels held in place with brushed stainless clamps.
