Open Staircase Cornwall
Our client was involved in a large refurbishment project in St Columb Major quite close to Newquay. A new quarter turn stair was needed to replace the old MDF and Pine flight which had disintegrated over the years. A bright, new floating timber staircase was supplied with open risers.
L Shaped Riser Infills
Separate riser infill pieces come as standard with all our floating timber staircases but on this occasion our client went with the integrated L shaped treads. These reduce the gap between to the treads to less than 100mm whilst giving the impression of the thicker tread when ascending and providing a L shape detail when viewed from the side.

Curved Handrail
The width of the opening was a little tight and the stair width was only 850mm. We therefore increased the width towards the bottom of the stair by splaying out the last few treads. The handrail at this point curved and twisted slightly to compliment the stunning curved handrail further up the flight at the 90 degree turn.
Floating Timber Staircase
To further increase the floating feel of the staircase, we removed the outer stringer from the final few steps after the turn and ‘hung’ the steps from spindles that screwed into a baton. This baton ran along side the edge of the floor and was fixed to the joist. The result from the room underneath was spectacular with the upper treads appearing to hover in mid air.
